Should I Buy a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro?

Should I Buy a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro?

Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are both fantastic laptops, but depending on your needs, one laptop is going to be more suited for you than the other. Here at JemJem, we do offer refurbished MacBook Airs and Pros for sale, so you can get the best deal on the laptop you really need. How do you figure out which one to buy? We’re here to help.

Should I Buy a MacBook Air?

We love the MacBook Air for its thin design and light weight. The laptop is unbelievably light, and is the cheapest Apple laptop you can buy. It has an impressive battery life of 12 hours for video, which means you can go a full day on the same charge, and a standby time of 30 days is best-in-class.

But to get to these impressive features, the laptop isn’t as powerful as the standard MacBook or MacBook Pro. The Air is best suited for those who need desktop functionality and find an iPad doesn’t do enough for them. The Air does web browsing, word processing, and day-to-day work best – and its small size makes it far more portable.

At the same time, if you’re looking for more memory and CPU-intensive functions, the MacBook Air isn’t for you. It can edit video or play a game, but slower than a MacBook Pro would. The Air is better suited for basic computing, and isn’t going to replace your desktop.

Screen size is also smaller, with only 11 and 13-inch models available (newer models are 13-inch only). For those who like a lot of desktop space to work in, you might find the MacBook Air lacking here. The screen is also LED-backlit and non-Retina. We still think it’s a great quality screen, but it does lack the richness in color of the Retina displays you’ll find on some MacBook Pros.

We see the MacBook Air as best suited for those that own a desktop already, and look at a laptop as an extension of their desktop computing. If you purchase the Air with this in mind, we’re sure you’ll be satisfied with your purchase.

Should I Buy a MacBook Pro?

The MacBook Pro is the top-of-the-line when it comes to Apple laptops. While not as thin or light as the MacBook Air, for its computing power the Pro is still quite thin and light. The MacBook Pro has better graphics, CPUs, and more memory than the Air, so memory-intensive applications like gaming and video editing perform beautifully.

Modern models for the most part include Apple’s impressive Retina Display technology, which results in a clearer, sharper, and richer image on the display. Overall, the MacBook Pro feels like an iMac in a small package, and this computer could even replace your desktop machine if you’d want it to.

Screen size options include 13 and 15-inch models, and newer models come with solid-state drives. While the MacBook Air does come with a SSD standard, with the Pro’s better components the processing speed is quite impressive.

We see the MacBook Pro as a perfect computer for college students. Parents, you’ll no doubt want whatever laptop you buy your child to last their entire college career. The combination of better computing power and a less fragile design of the Pro seems better suited for the long haul than the Air is.

It’s also perfect for mobile professionals. Like we said, the MacBook Pro could replace your desktop. Since you’re on the road a lot, you’ll want a computer that has the power for just about any task you may encounter.
